Cenotaph

Across the globe, buildings, districts, and entire cities are rising at a dizzying pace. Stricken by premature obsolescence, these structures transition directly from construction sites to modern ruins without ever being inhabited—from "ghost cities" to "tofu-dreg buildings," they embody the phenomenon of instant ruins.

Cenotaph is a mechanized installation that continuously moves, builds, and dismantles concrete sculptural elements, generating the evolving landscape of an infinite model city. Beneath the surface of this device, a secondary layer collects the debris and waste of this ongoing production. Meanwhile, a moving camera system travels through the inner depths of the architecture, producing a live tracking shot that plays with scale and shifts the viewer’s perspective.

By definition, a cenotaph is a funerary monument erected in honor of a deceased person whose body remains elsewhere. True to its name, this automated city has been deserted from its inception, devoid of any practical function. This anti-architecture stands as a monument to a suspended promise: an environment designed for a human presence that will never arrive.

Cénotaphe

Aux quatre coins du monde, des bâtiments, des quartiers, voire des villes entières s’élèvent à une vitesse fulgurante. Frappées d’obsolescence précoce, ces constructions basculent directement du chantier à l’état de vestige sans jamais avoir été habitées — de « ghost cities » en « tofu-dreg buildings », elles incarnent le phénomène des ruines instantanées.

Cénotaphe est une installation mécanisée qui assemble et désassemble en continu des éléments sculpturaux en béton, générant le paysage évolutif d'une ville infinie en maquette. Dans l'envers de ce dispositif s'accumulent les résidus de cette production perpétuelle. Un système de caméra mobile traverse en direct les entrailles de l'architecture, créant un travelling immersif qui trouble les échelles et le regard du spectateur.

Par définition, un cénotaphe est un tombeau dressé à la mémoire d'un défunt mais ne contenant aucun corps. À cette image, cette cité automatisée est désertée depuis sa création, dénuée de toute fonction usuelle. Cette anti-architecture s'affirme comme le monument d'une promesse suspendue : celle d'un espace conçu pour une occupation humaine qui n'adviendra jamais.

装置作品Cénotaphe0 （纪念碑）的尺寸为1500x1500x2000mm，通常展示于暗空间, 作品由三个部分构成，上方是由水泥模型搭建的迷你未来城市景观，一台机械以及磁感应装置不断自动搭建, 或拆除楼房模型，下方则是呈金字塔状的建筑废墟景观。而在上方装置中央，一台微型摄像头不断来回移动，在装置一旁的巨大墙面上投射出实时且无止境建设的宏观图景，面向此景, 观者仿佛身处其中。 

装置采用单向镜像亚克力和铝制框架搭建，用内部镜面效果营造出无限延伸的城市景观，而在内部景观中，每个建筑模型表面都有艺术家精心设计并雕刻的图样和磁石嵌入，以强化暗空间中镜面反射图像延伸，及机械装置准确搭建的效果。水泥模型被自动机械化装置无止境的连接和拆解, 一台迷你摄像头记录着这场无目的无终止的建造程序。毕业于Le Fresnoy 国家视听艺术研究中心的艺术家Thomas Garnier 构造了装置作品Cénotaphe （纪念碑）以思考人类进入<即刻废墟纪元> （« l’ère de la ruine instantanée »）的开端。 他阐述了作品中牵连美学，政治及哲学的思考。 

在作品中, Thomas 思考不同时间维度中废墟相关的问题，他使用现实世界中的建筑材料—-水泥，搭建层层楼房模型，而楼层上方的机械装置将其组建, 再拆解。在长期的运作中，这座城市景观将逐渐被摧毁。 

他谈到了米歇尔福柯在名为 <另类空间> 的研讨会上发明的术语 “异托邦” （hétérotopie），如果乌托邦是完美世界的建设，反乌托邦的理论是与其对立，“异托邦”则处于两者之间。对艺术家而言，异托邦是不强加于人的乌托邦, 而他探索的时空，也许对他人而言是末日, 却令他着迷。
